BRING BACK LAW AND ORDER
Dear Friends,

A wave of civil unrest has spread across our country. Chaos has erupted in many of America’s largest cities as radical left-wing activists have usurped this moment to advance their own cultural and political agenda. We have seen angry mobs led by Antifa hijack protests against George Floyd’s tragic and horrifying death to destroy private property, loot businesses, and attack innocent civilians. Now these activists have shifted their focus to tearing down historical statues and defacing monuments. We cannot allow our society to fall victim to this chaos.

In Seattle, activists have seized part of the city to create a lawless enclave called the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” (CHAZ). Many disturbing reports have come out of the CHAZ, including business owners being threatened, armed vigilante activists patrolling the streets and most recently, multiple shootings have occurred. When law enforcement and medical personnel attempt to respond to 911 calls, they have met violent opposition from “protestors” and been forced to retreat. Instead of quickly reestablishing control, the Democrat mayor has effectively surrendered part of her city to a mob.

In other major cities, a wave of violent crime has spiked even as Democrats embrace the movement to #AbolishThePolice. In Chicago, over Father’s Day weekend, over a 100 people were shot and fourteen killed – including five innocent children. In Minneapolis, 1,600 gunshots were recorded and more than a 100 people shot in the last thirty days. In Los Angeles, in the first week of June, the LAPD reported a 250% increase in homicides.

This lawlessness is a failure of leadership by state and local officials. For the safety and security of all Americans, governors and mayors must return to law and order. Unfortunately, in many cities, Democratic officials are instead rushing to appease radical activists by defunding police departments.

Just as politicians should be held accountable for their failures, so too should Americans hold the mainstream media responsible for their role in this mayhem. News outlets like CNN and MSNBC continue to downplay the chaos caused by anarchists like Antifa and they seem determined to sugarcoat the madness taking place in our cities.

There will be no winners if we allow radical activists, failed Democrat politicians, and blowhard leftist pundits to continue to vilify law enforcement who daily sacrifice their safety to protect our communities. Reasonable Americans know that we must both oppose racism and support law enforcement. I know from talking with many of you that the overwhelming majority of you are shocked and disturbed by recent events. We need to speak out and demand a return to law and order. Remaining silent is not an option.

LIFE NOW ACT

Last week, I introduced the Limiting Infant Fatality and Empowering Nonprofit Organization Workforces (LIFE NOW) Act. This bill would prevent taxpayer dollars from going to abortion providers and provide funding for faith-based organizations so they will continue to assist Americans through this pandemic.

When the government shut down the economy, it was understood that Congress had the responsibility to assist America’s small businesses and non-profits. However, Planned Parenthood affiliates – despite not meeting qualifications to receive assistance from the Paycheck Protection Program – managed to receive $80 million in taxpayer funding meant to support struggling businesses.

As our country recovers from this pandemic, we must continue protecting life at all stages rather than subsidizing the abortion industry, which takes the lives of unborn American children daily.

JUNE'S HICE HEADLINER

Each month, we recognize one outstanding local citizen who goes above and beyond to help their neighbors and strengthen the community. This month’s Hice Headliner is Tonya McWhorter, the Volunteer Coordinator and Operator of the Greene County Food Pantry.

Tonya began her work with the Greene County Food Pantry in 2007 and after ten years of volunteering, Tonya was offered a full time position as volunteer coordinator in 2017. Today, Tonya oversees the 100 plus volunteers a month as they work to feed over 550 families. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the food pantry has seen a massive increase in demand for support. However, thanks to the increase of donations by both companies and individuals, the Greene County Food Pantry has been able to withstand the surge in demand.  We are incredibly honored to recognize Tonya McWhorter for the impact that she makes each and every day to make Greene County a better place.

To nominate an outstanding individual who is making a positive impact in your community, please send an email to Jessica.Hayes@mail.house.gov.
